چکیده

First results from the GPS radio occultation experiment aboard the German CHAMP satellite are presented. The agreement between observed temperature profiles in the upper troposphere and the lower stratosphere and temperature profiles obtained from meteorological analyses is found to be below 1 K. The data processing and analysis system (operated by GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam) has been successfully validated with GPS/MET occultation data. A radio holographic analysis of GPS/MET observations reveals signatures of secondary signal components. Ray tracing simulations suggest that these secondary components are due to GPS signal reflections at Earth’s surface.

GPS radio occultation with CHAMP : Initial results

Fig. 1. The German CHAMP satellite (view from antivelocity direction with GPS occultation antennas) Abstract: The German CHAMP (Challenging Minisatellite Payload) satellite (launched on July 15, 2000) is a geoscience mission aiming for the determination of Earth’s gravity and magnetic field and for GPS-based atmospheric sounding. The atmospheric profiling experiment onboard CHAMP was started in...

Highlights of Gps Radio Occultation with Champ ( Neutral Atmosphere )

The atmosphere sounding experiment of the German CHAMP (CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload) satellite mission was activated on February 11, 2001. Since then more than 110,000 occultations were recorded as of mid-December 2002. The results of nearly two years CHAMP GPS (Global Positioning System) occultation measurements and data analysis have shown, that significant improvements of the GPS radio...

Sounding of the topside ionosphere/plasmasphere based on GPS measurements from CHAMP: Initial results

[1] Beside the GPS radio occultation measurements of the troposphere and ionosphere, the CHAMP satellite tracks presently up to 8 GPS satellites simultaneously for navigation. The received dual frequency GPS signals provide valuable information on the ionization state of the topside ionosphere and plasmasphere. This paper briefly describes a new developed model assisted technique to improve the...

Vertical Gradients of Refractivity in the Mesosphere and Atmosphere Retrieved from GPS/MET and CHAMP Radio Occultation Data

Fine structures in the vertical gradient of the electron density have been retrieved by means of analysis of the amplitude of radio occultation (RO) data in sporadic E-layers (heights interval 85-110 km). Maximum values of the positive gradients 45⋅10, 48⋅10, 25⋅10, 29⋅10 [mkm] are located at levels 92, 105 km (GPS/MET event 0393) and 93.5, 100 km (GPS/MET event 0583). Variations in the vertica...

Status of GPS radio occultation with CHAMP

The German geoscience satellite CHAMP (CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload, launched on July 15, 2000, Reigber et al., 2002) is in orbit now for more than 2 years. CHAMP's measurements are used to determine Earth's gravity and magnetic field and to derive precise information about vertical temperature, humidity and electron density distribution on a global scale using the innovative GPS radio occ...
